Sorry I've been so silent over here. Between every other day bandage changes at the vet's (which requires two trips and both of them require sitting in a patient's room waiting), orthodontist appointments, tutoring, lacrosse practices, co-op, sewing class, shopping for food and shopping for birthday party presents, I feel like I've moved into my car.
Rocky is doing really well. They took photos of his leg for me today so I could see his progress. Lots of healthy pink tissue growing. Once he's fully recovered, his leg will hardly be an issue at all. For now, they've been changing his bandages every other day and having to put him under to do it. Today we've switched to what they call a "hardening bandage" and he gets to go all the way until Monday without a change. Woo-hoo!
The vet tech (Stephanie) has been adorable. She likes to put heart and tulip cut outs on the bandages. She changes the primary color every time they wrap him up, too. This extra effort endlessly entertains us and makes the whole experience much less tedious. The blue cast with red heart was for Valentine's Day. Here's another recent cast:

So sweet... We had a foster once who had reconstructive surgery on his front leg at the U Penn Hospital. He had 13 pins and massive piece of hardware. So I know how miserable Rocky is. What is so cool is how adaptable dogs are to suffering and how quickly they bounce back! My wife and I rehab them all the time and are always amazed at what they look like when they leave compared to what they look like when we get them.
Thanks guys. Drew, you inspire me! What a gift you are giving those dogs.
My vet said yesterday that she thinks we're doing an awesome job with him which made me feel good because it is some work and very expensive. Seeing his happy little tail wag makes it worth it. :)
BTW, forgot to mention that this past weekend I spent with my son and his Boy Scout troop in upstate PA at a winter festival sponsored by one of the local Kiwanis clubs. One of the events was dog sledding. I have to say that I have never really gotten into this sport before but after seeing it live it gave me a great appreciation for the "Mushers" and the animals themselves...what magnificent creatures.
I think the relationship of dog to man is truly unique in nature.

R. Michael, I agree with you! I got into reading Jack London this fall and found the whole experience of dog sledding and his unfolding how the relationships between dogs and their masters develop fascinating. I loved his writing! Have you read much London? I read Call of the Wild and White Fang.
Yay for Rocky and all his wonderful caretakers.
Rocky's a tough guy, just like his namesake...
Atta Boy!
What a trooper! I love him. He reminds me of my son - LOL, only because my son had to have a leg cast changed (once a week, not twice a day) and the colors and patterns made if "fun".
interesting you should ask this question. I was speaking to my daughters (ages 17 and 15) about both of these books (White Fang and Call of the Wild) a couple of weeks ago and they both independently told me how much this disliked them...which to me was a shock because I loved them! But...to my credit they also went on to tell me of my other recommendations that they did not like including...
Of Mice and Men
Robinson Crusoe
Moby Dick
so I don't take it too personally when they diss my book suggestions...I think I am still in good literary company.
