Barack-Star Obama

If Bono's ability to move Americans to action through arena rock is any indication, Barack Obama may be the best thing to happen to American politics in a long time.

You guessed it. Here's my UPI article featuring Bono and Barack.

Fox Should Fire John Gibson

I've posted another article at UPI. After a week since Gibson's insulting remarks the day after Ledger's death, silence from the Fox executives. I have to ask, why?

The Best Advice I Ever Received

My UPI column is now infrequent due to the demands of my business. However, this week I recycled an article I wrote for this blog for today's column. My kids were on my mind as the news broke about Andy Reid's two kids (Eagle's coach) going to prison for drug dealing.

A Doubting Teresa

I wrote for UPI this week (took August off). I'll probably be contributing once every two weeks (maybe even move to monthly) because I do so much writing now, it's been difficult to keep up with UPI as well.

This column takes some of the writing from the last two blog entries and expands the thoughts. You may or may not want to read it if you've been reading along here. I post it for those of you who are coming to the blog to discuss the article (found me through UPI) or those who aren't finished talking about this topic (or are just really nice and always read what I write regardless). :)

Thanks for everyone's participation the last several weeks. I feel I've been able to get inside some of the thoughts at a more profound level through your comments, challenges and contributions.

Salut! (as the French say)

Harry Potter and the homeschooling world

Obviously with Potter on the brain, my weekly column had to be about HP and his power to enchant the previously condemnatory constituency of which I'm a part. :)

The audacity of a right to pursue happiness

Today's UPI column bears a title I didn't choose, but a topic I did. :) I have more thoughts about happiness and if I get a chance later, I'll add to the column here with a few footnotes. I'd be interested in what you think the "right to pursue happiness" actually means today. Where does my right start and stop?

Taking interpretation to task

Today's UPI column deals with the task of interpretation, whether looking at this week's movies or ancient texts.

Prayer is a waste of time

Today's column shares my reflections on prayer. Don't be intimidated or put off by the title until you read the article. :)

The poison of the virtual pen

Today's column reflects on how I've examined myself in relation to online community.

Truth's Hall of Mirrors

Here's my current UPI column. I took last week off so don't wonder if you missed one. :)

Jesus as Mother

In honor of Mother's day, I've written a UPI column about Julian of Norwich (we're studying her book "The Showings" in Doctrine 1). She's not at all my favorite theologian from these previous four years. But I did find her vision of salvation and Jesus provocative enough that I wanted to share it here, in connection with the modern topic of feminism. (I had no time to edit and in re-reading, I'm a bit annoyed by some of the choppiness. So fwiw...)

Adventures in invading personal space

Excuses, excuses. I didn't let personal discomfort get in the way of telling someone she was going to hell.

Today's column was fun to write. :)

Bashing White Men

My UPI column today is for the strong of stomach and those willing to see that I'm dealing in categories rather than individuals. It should be obvious to any reader here how much I adore individual white men. They make up the majority of my readership and are thoughtful, not racist or sexist, insightful, partners in the journey toward a just society, and frankly, most of you white dudes who read and post here have tutored me in what it means to not be racist or sexist. Honestly, I relate to Rebecca because her rhetoric is familiar. I used to be a fan of guys like Rush and Dr. Dobson, and women like Dr. Laura.

Let's just say that through my graduate program years and my hundreds of interactions on the web, I've come to see much more clearly just how much privilege I stand on unconsciouly every day.

So today's column is dedicated to all those white men "who get it" and to the rest of us who are just starting to.

Read this as prep for tomorrow's column

I wrote my column for tomorrow as a response to this column by Rebecca Hagelin (evangelical woman of the year and author of Home Invasion).

You might want to read it in advance to understand better the source that generated the passion of my column. :)

Religionless Easter

My UPI column is back up. I wrote more about religionless Christianity in this column and used some of the Bonhoeffer material in it. I'll add detail to his views over the course of this week.

UPI Column

Just a quick note to mention that I am taking off the month of March from writing my column. Writing my thesis instead... at least that's what I tell my friends.

Belief, dedication and the Oscars

This UPI column is certainly not my best one of the year, but it's what I had time to write.

Make faith more complicated

Here's this week's UPI Column. I may have to take a few weeks off of this column so I can focus on my thesis. This may be the last one for a little bit.
