Conservative Commentator George Will eviscerates McCain

McCain Loses His Head
Under the pressure of the financial crisis, one presidential candidate is behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high. It is not Barack Obama.

(snip)

The political left always aims to expand the permeation of economic life by politics. Today, the efficient means to that end is government control of capital. So, is not McCain's party now conducting the most leftist administration in American history? The New Deal never acted so precipitously on such a scale. Treasury Secretary Paulson, asked about conservative complaints that his rescue program amounts to socialism, said, essentially: This is not socialism, this is necessary. That non sequitur might be politically necessary, but remember that government control of capital is government control of capitalism. Does McCain have qualms about this, or only quarrels?

On "60 Minutes" Sunday evening, McCain, saying "this may sound a little unusual," said that he would like to replace Cox with Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic attorney general of New York who is the son of former governor Mario Cuomo. McCain explained that Cuomo has "respect" and "prestige" and could "lend some bipartisanship." Conservatives have been warned.

Conservatives who insist that electing McCain is crucial usually start, and increasingly end, by saying he would make excellent judicial selections. But the more one sees of his impulsive, intensely personal reactions to people and events, the less confidence one has that he would select judges by calm reflection and clear principles, having neither patience nor aptitude for either.

I always consider it an accomplishment when I can read an entire article by George Will without consulting the dictionary...although have to admit he has probably done more to expand my vocabulary (post-college) than perhaps anyone else.

Thought it was well written.

I, too, have to sound out all the words in a George Will editorial.

Julie is there anything to the rumors circulating about Biden resigning and Clinton taking his place? Surely this is just last minute craziness but I have gotten a few emails about the rumor. How is the Obama campaign handling this?

Obama/Biden are solid.

I always appreciate an article by George Will since I often agree with him. :o Thanks for posting it.

If I didn't have Obama's record staring me in the face I'd agree with this one that inexperience may be a better bet than temperament. (Though Will didn't quite say that.) But I am not convinced that Obama will cut down either the size and intervention of the federal government since I see no evidence of it in his voting record. So it's not just his inexperience that bothers me (though there is that). It's the combination of his inexperience and the votes that are recorded.

I don't see taxes as charity. I don't think government (esp. big government) uses money wisely or efficiently.

Becky, I respect your thoughtful opinion on this topic.

I guess if I felt that the Republicans could be trusted to reduce the size of gov't (their platform, but not their record), I might be less excited about putting the Dems in charge. But it appears that the Repubs. are simply more talk than walk.

That's how I see it.
