This just in from Seattle

Jon called from the Off the Map conference.

He was in charge of "crowd warm-ups" this a.m.

Jon: Who's traveled the farthest to be here?

Crowd calls out Idaho, Illinois, Connecticut...

Crowd all astonishment at the distance some will travel just for a conference.

Jon: Who's the farthest from God?

Laughter! Totally unexpected.

A voice: Me. I head up the local Community Atheists Organization in our city.

Murmurs. Shuffling feet. Whispers. Can it be? An atheist at a Christian conference?

Jon deadpan
: Can't be you. You don't believe in God.

Uproar.

Said Jon to me on the phone: I think I'm good at this. :)

Just a footnote. Jim Henderson who runs this conference is the same guy who wrote the book "Jim and Casper Go to Church" which I reviewed a few weeks ago. Jim has a way with atheists and they do come to his conferences as guests. They're there to provide honest feedback to Christians about how they come across.

What a great comeback -- witty, and it eased the discomfort that sounds like came into the room. Well played!

I'm loving this bit of dialogue.
